My favorite tip to keep kids healthy at school is applying oil to the nostrils in the morning. This is an ancient preventative measure called nasya.
Nasya is an oil that is applied to the inside of the nostrils for the purpose of lubrication and protection. It is a very simple process that has a big impact.
Lubricated sinuses are a big key in a healthy immune system. It is often the dry air in institutional buildings that allows germs to spread like wildfire through a classroom. A lubricated sinus cavity will act like a barrier to colds and flu.
In addition to better breathing and stronger immunity, nasya has the magical effect of creating a calm mind and triggering the parasympathetic nervous system. This can be especially important for children who are overstimulated or who find challenge staying focused at school.
A specially blended nasya oil can be purchased for this purpose. You can also just use some good quality sesame oil. Please read the following suggested methods.
How To Lubricate The Sinuses
For pre-teens, teenagers and adults, nasya can be done by applying 2-4 drops of oil to the inside wall of each nostril. You can apply the oil with a dropper. After it’s applied, gently press on the outside of the nostrils to rub the oil around a bit. Finally, sniff sharply a couple of times to get the tiny oil molecules back into the sinus cavity.
For smaller children, use your little finger to carefully and gently apply a small amount of plain sesame oil just inside the nose. As they go about their day, the oil will slowly make its way back into the nose (as well as down their lip).
Applying nasya in the morning (especially with a finger) is simple enough for most children to eventually be able to administer themselves. Even if it’s not done perfectly, they are learning an empowered preventative measure that can be practiced throughout their life.
