AyurvedaNextDoor (AND): How would you describe your day?

Myra Lewin:
My Daily Routine: Ayurvedic Practitioner Myra Lewin, Anahola, HI USA

Blessed. Each morning I honor the new day with a 5am vedic fire ceremony and mantra, followed by pranayama and meditation until 6:15am. I walk the pups, practice asana and have breakfast. At the moment of sunrise we practice agnihotra, a powerful vedic fire ceremony that honor’s the sun and nature’s rhythm. Agnihotra has been particularly healing for me and the farm on which we live.

I typically work with clients or students in the mornings and after lunch or spend time with my team developing or refining programs (we’re currently creating a distance learning program on Ayurveda that will launch later this year).

I always build in time to enjoy the beautiful Hawaiian ocean each week, as well for my personal study. Working with clients and students inspires me to continue my personal growth with Ayurveda and yoga. There is no end to what I can learn from these teachings.

After dinner, we practice agnihotra again at the exact time of sunset. The fantastic thing is that the schedule is similar when we host treatment guests, retreats or trainings. Our guests gain first hand experience with the benefits of these powerful practices.

AND: Can you please describe the work you do and the services you offer?

Myra Lewin:

Our name, Hale Pule, means ‘house of prayer’ in Hawaiian. This reflects our goal to bring the gift of Ayurveda and Yoga to others by creating an environment in our home and training center that fully honors these teachings. By raising our own consciousness, we can support others to do the same.

I have been a wellness professional in Ayurvedic healing and training Yoga teachers since 1999. I started Hale Pule as a place to provide Ayurvedic consultations, complete treatments, including panchakarma, retreats, personal spiritual guidance, as well as online courses in the foundations of Ayurveda and Yoga. We also offer experiential workshops and conference presentations. Later this year we will launch a distance learning Ayurvedic Counselor Course and onsite apprentice program.

To share these powerful practices worldwide is such a blessing. I am so happy to see growing interest in Ayurveda in the past few years. In my early days it was slow going.

AND: What fitness activities do you take part in?

Myra Lewin:

I enjoy surfing and hiking, along with daily Yoga asana. I walk my pups, Sukha and Nika, twice each day too.

AND: What are you currently passionately involved in or excited about?

Myra Lewin:

I’ve been passionate about food since the 1970’s. That is the basis of the two books I wrote, Freedom in Your Relationship with Food and Simple Ayurvedic Recipes. It’s also the same reason I started Durga Farms in 2011. It is quickly becoming a tropical fruit oasis and an abundant asparagus producer. The daily agnihotra ceremonies we do on the farm attune the land to nature’s rhythms so we get wonderful produce for all of Hale Pule’s events.

Hale Pule will soon have an additional location to offer premiere Ayurvedic panchakarma and dosha balancing treatments. This, plus the launch of our distance learning Ayurvedic Counselor Course later this year, gives me a lot to look forward to.

AND: What are you most proud of that you’d like people to know?

Myra Lewin:

I walked through my discomfort at being in the public eye and have produced two online video courses, travel worldwide to teach workshops and present at conferences. The greatest growth comes from moving outside of one’s comfort zone.

It also is a wonderful thing to be an older woman and feel good. Growing up, I saw few examples of healthy adults in their later years, but an Ayurvedic lifestyle offers a realistic way to achieve health at any age.

AND: Has there been one Ayurvedic practice that has stood out among others in it’s benefits to your personal growth or well being?

Myra Lewin:

Daily abhyanga is essential for keeping my vata in balance. We are spiritual beings in a body, and to have a full spiritual experience it is necessary to be grounded and present physically. This is a gift Ayurveda has given me.

AND: What 5 Ayurvedic practices do you currently do everyday without fail and why?

Myra Lewin:

Neti and nasya for clarity of mind, clearing the sinuses and general health.

Pranayama and meditation for enhancing my spiritual connection and calming vata dosha. Pranayama practiced appropriately and regularly with a fresh attitude each day, organizes vata dosha and keeps it balanced. Meditation allows me to listen to the God of my heart.

Abhyanga, warm herbal oil application, calms the doshas and improves the quality of my skin.

At each meal I chew food to a liquid state and stop eating at the first burp or before. This provides agni the greatest opportunity to do its job and prevents indigestion. I use eating as an opportunity to commune with the food and nature, remembering that it is the most powerful medicine.

Agnihotra at sunrise and sunset attunes me to the rhythms of nature. It cleanses the atmosphere, brings internal healing and softens my heart. I love it as it transforms my life daily.
