Traveling is one of those ideas in my head that sprouts imagination and wonder. “To see the world and experience that beauty of the Universe.” This has always been my go-to reason as to why I have the travel bug. This world is huge, and there’s so much to be seen. Even the process of packing and hopping on the plane elicits excitement. I love how something that used to be very expensive and difficult to do, is within reach now-a-days.

On the flip side, traveling can be a little exhausting in itself. Dragging your luggage to the ticket counter, finding the perfect seat on the plane, and hoping your trip goes smoothly can create some tension.

So, what can you do to make sure that everything goes just the way you planned? You can start off by taking care of your own body. Here’s where Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga, plays a huge role in traveling.

Ayurveda, the ancient medical system of India, recognizes that traveling can be super nourishing and healing for the mind and soul. To get away, relax, and enjoy—what could be better?! But for the body, it can be a little un-grounding. While traveling, it’s common for the light, clear, and dry qualities to increase in our bodies. This can cause our digestion to go a little wacky, and create a little dehydration to our bodies.

Try these tips the next time you take flight:

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Water is your best friend when traveling—by plane, car, whatever. Try opting for a glass of water, no ice, when the air hostess stops by your seat. Also be sure to get plenty of water before and after you leave. This will help with the drying quality, and help ensure you don’t dehydrate.

2. Ginger.

Ginger is great for the digestive fire! The heat that is created will help your digestion stay at par. Fresh grated ginger is always a great option. But for something easier, try this Ginger Liquid Extract. Take just one dropper worth before and after you take-off. It can also, from an alternative perspective, help with any nausea that some people experience while traveling. Bonus: it comes in a TSA-approved size!

3. Stay warm.

Keeping a light blanket or sweater with you, even in the summer months, will ensure that you stay nice and warm from any drafts you encounter at the train stations, airports, whatever.
