While frequent snacking is not recommended in Ayurveda, one snack between meals and on an empty stomach should be okay. Vata body types especially can use the extra grounding that a healthy snack brings. Timing is everything, so be sure your previous meal has been digested.

Vata body types should favor heavy, moist, oily and warming foods. Reduce cold, rough, dry, light, raw foods.

10 Vata Dosha Snacks

1. Avocado Spread

Mash the contents of one avocado with a squeeze of lime and a little salt. Use as a spread on whole wheat crackers, or with chopped vegetables. The oiliness and heaviness of avocado counteracts the dryness and lightness of Vata dosha.

2. Soft Fruits

Think ripe mango, berries, grapes, and stone fruits. Hard fruits like apples, pears and persimmons may aggravate Vata.

3. Cup of Miso Soup

Sweet and salty miso is great to warm the body. Simply heat water, add miso and salt and pepper. Light, but simple and delicious.

4. Crystallized Ginger

Sweet and warming! Good for Vata and Kapha, good in moderation for Pitta.

5. Homemade Sweet Potato Chips

Cut a sweet potato cross-wise into thin slices. Place the slices onto an oiled skillet and heat on medium, both sides, until cooked. Sprinkle with salt and herbs. Sweet potatoes are great for Vata and Pitta dosha.

6. Lassi

Dilute plain yogurt with water and add spices of your choice (cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, etc.). Whisk in a bowl until frothy (about two minutes). Then serve! Great for all three doshas.

7. Warm Mung Bean Hummus

Yes, eat your hummus warm! It’s surprisingly delicious AND easier to digest. Substitute mung beans for chick peas in your favorite hummus recipe. Serve with crackers, warm chapatti or vegetables. Served warm, this hummus is tri-doshic.

8. Sunflower Seeds

Good for all three doshas. We love them salted.

9. Amazake

Amazake is a fermented rice beverage similar to a milkshake, minus the dairy. Enjoy it warm or room-temp. Good for Vata and Pitta.

10. Vegetable Quesadilla

Spread sauteed vegetable (sweet potato, jerusalem artichoke, celery root are some ideas) onto a tortilla. Sprinkle with your favorite spices and salt. Add dairy or non-dairy cheese. Then heat in an oiled pan. Slice like a pizza, and enjoy! Good for Vata and Pitta.
